Christ’s Hope UK Newsletter – October 2022

20 years of service in Rehoboth comes to an enD

Rehoboth was a children’s home under the auspices of Youth for Christ Namibia when Christ’s Hope International was formed in 2003 and remained that way until it became a CarePoint several years later. It is located on the southern outskirts of Rehoboth which is about 60 miles south of the capital Windhoek. Rehoboth has been a growing town, but this has all taken place to the north, closer to Windhoek. Georgie and Rob Wilson visited the home in its early years and found there was hardly any food for the children. They bought food and on returning to the UK launched an appeal at Melbourn Baptist Church to raise support, which has continued to the present day. Christ’s Hope International UK raised the funds to purchase the property and has supported it in many ways over the years, along with the German organisation. In 2014, a new CarePoint was started on the site and in honour of Georgie Wilson, it was named after her, as she had sadly died of cancer.

Several members of Melbourn Baptist Church and St Nic’s in Nottingham have visited the Rehoboth facility over the years, to carry out projects and build relationships with staff and children. At the peak of its activities Rehoboth has been attended by up to 70 children. Unfortunately, all of the children who were attending the Rehoboth CarePoint have recently left the program. The decision has been made to close the CarePoint and relocate it elsewhere in Namibia. This is for many reasons but mainly due to Rehoboth growing and access to the CarePoint by children in extreme poverty has lessened significantly.

The Georgie Wilson CarePoint is moving to Okahandja, Namibia

After the closure of Rehoboth, the Georgie Wilson CarePoint will be relocating into an already established ministry centre, currently known as the Rock, will be renamed the Georgie Wilson Care Centre.

Details of children to be sponsored will be available in November. Christ’s Hope is very thankful for those sponsors who supported children in Rehoboth and trust that they will transition to take on new children in the new CarePoint.

New partnership with Uganda and a big thanks to the Naomi Beckford Foundation

Partnering with Uganda to expand its work into a place called Kasokoso, is an exciting new venture for Christ’s Hope UK. This place suffers from extreme poverty and is in need of experiencing the transformation of Jesus and the practical help that Christ’s Hope can bring. The catalyst for this partnership was the significant donation made by the Naomi Beckford Foundation. This was formalised at Naomi’s Life Celebration on the 6th of August.

Christ’s Hope wishes to extend its greatest thanks to Naomi and her family for involving us in your celebration. This is Naomi’s story of what eventually led her to Christ’s Hope: In 1997, Naomi Beckford was at a Wesleyan Church retreat when she had the vision of starting a charity to help children in Jamacia, her home country, and Zambia, the country of her beloved son-in-law John.

Supported by Leanora Headley, and the late Lilieth Grant she pushed forward with this vision and started to raise funds. The Naomi Beckford Foundation was registered as a charity in 2008 with the aim of supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean and Africa. Over the years, Naomi has relied on an army of church brothers and sisters and her family as she organised fundraising events and approached friends for donations. The amount raised reached £10,000. Naomi is delighted that this amount is now to be passed over to Christ’s Hope International to support a new Ministry CarePoint in Uganda. Naomi would like to continue her legacy by inviting you to donate to Christ’s Hope International by using the QR code below:

Christ's Hope UK Newsletter - May 2022

Introducing…

John Bromley, the newly appointed UK Director for Christ’s Hope International.

John was born to missionary parents in Papua New Guinea and has recently moved to the UK from Australia with his family. He is a father of seven children ranging in ages between 9 and 27. Amongst other organisations, John has served for many years with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) and brings with him experience in working in Christian charities and non-government organisations. John has a heart of compassion for vulnerable children which led him and his wife to start a charity in Papua New Guinea doing similar things to what Christ’s Hope does in Africa.

John is excited to take on this challenge and is looking forward to working with the Board of Trustees to grow and develop Christ’s Hope in the UK so that it can play a greater part in the support of children impacted by HIV/AIDS and living in extreme poverty.

The Director visits Africa

The Director visited Uganda and Kenya as part of his orientation to Christ’s Hope and its work. He was extremely impressed at what he saw.

The staff were of a high calibre and it was obvious the passion they have for the children. Their dedication and commitment to their work was very evident. Their faith in God showed through in their daily conduct and the way they related to the children.

They made learning fun and encouraged the children to grow in their knowledge and understanding of God. This was evident in the testimonies that the children shared. The Director heard many stories of the impact that Christ’s Hope is having in the lives of the Children and their families.

The ministry centres were well maintained, and the children were well cared for.

Change Coming

Christ’s Hope International has work in Namibia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Eswatini and South Africa.

Traditionally, Christ’s Hope UK has partnered mainly with Namibia to support their work and sponsor the children on their program. This has been a rewarding partnership and seen a lot of changes in the way in which care has been delivered to the children. There is more change to come as the Namibia management considers the most effective use of its resources to impact the neediest children.

The UK is also broadening its partnership to include Uganda where there is a vision for expansion of its work into a very needy area in Kampala, the capital city. The catalyst for the UK partnership with Uganda came through a large donation, of which we are very grateful and praise God for it.
